Wheel balance

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

The even distribution of weight around the mounted tire and wheel assembly. An out-of-balance assembly causes vibration at specific speed ranges, which can accelerate cupping wear and cause driver fatigue. Balance weights are added to the rim to compensate for weight variations in the tire-wheel assembly.

Wheel balance is one check among several for vibration complaints — also check runout, wheel-end condition, and suspension before assuming balance is the only cause.

Real-World Use

A drive tire that has developed mild cupping despite correct pressure prompts a wheel balance check — the assembly is found to be significantly out of balance, contributing to the bounce pattern.
