Steer axle

The front axle that steers the vehicle. The steer axle carries the forward vehicle weight and all steering forces. Tires on the steer axle face unique demands: full steering side loads, braking forces, and the highest safety implications of any tire position. Federal tread depth minimums are stricter for steer axle tires (4/32 inch) than for other positions.

Tire decisions on the steer axle should be conservative — use new tires, verify load ratings, and inspect more frequently than other positions.

Real-World Use

A fleet manager reviewing a near-miss incident during hard braking traces a contributing factor to steer tires at 4/32 inch — just at the legal minimum but without adequate wet-weather margin. Fleet pull policy for steer tires is raised to 6/32 inch.
