Slow leak

Last reviewed: 2026-05-20

A gradual loss of tire pressure that occurs over days or weeks rather than hours. Slow leaks are often undetected between inspections, allowing tires to run progressively lower until a pressure check or failure reveals the problem. Common causes include deteriorated valve cores, porous bead seals, micro-punctures, and innerliner damage.

A tire consistently 5–10 PSI below target at each weekly check has a slow leak — do not just air it up and move on. Find and fix the cause.

Real-World Use

A trailer tire reads 10 PSI below target every Monday for three weeks despite being aired up each time — soapy-water testing reveals a valve core leak that was never investigated after the first low reading.
